Barbara Berkman, Strategy Council member at the Sloan Center on Aging & Work, receives the ACS’s 2012 Distinguished Achievement in Cancer Award

20 April 2012—Dr. Barbara Berkman has been selected by the American Cancer Society (ACS) Board of Directors to receive the ACS’s 2012 Distinguished Achievement in Cancer Award.

Dr. Berkman is the Helen Rehr/Ruth Fizdale Professor of Health and Mental Health at Columbia University School of Social Work. She is also the P.I. and National Director of the Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholars Program. In recent years, Dr. Berkman has made a great impact as a teacher in GSSW's doctoral program and as a mentor for our junior faculty.

Having served on the ACS Research Council and other ACS committees for many years, Dr. Berkman brought a psychosocial perspective into a predominantly biologically-oriented research environment.
