15 October 2008—"Unemployment has been increasing nationwide and last month stood at 6.1 percent. Nebraska's unemployment rate was 3.5 percent in August, the latest figure available," writes Joe Ruff of the Omaha World-Herald.
"At the same time, layoffs of older Americans have been happening in greater numbers than in years past, partly because they make up a larger percentage of an aging work force, according to a report from the Sloan Center on Aging and Work at Boston College.
"The number of workers age 55 and older in Nebraska, for example, grew 31 percent from 2000 to 2007, to 156,568 people, according to the Nebraska Labor Department."
