Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowship

university fellowships committee

Juniors and Seniors may apply.

The Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowship was established by the College of William and Mary to inspire the best of a new generation to pursue careers in public service. The Awards are offered annually to three outstanding undergraduates from across the nation. Each Fellowship winner will spend a summer in an internship position with the U.S. Department of State in London, Paris, or Washington, DC. The Harriman Fellowship offers an eleven-week internship opportunity, as well as a $5,000 stipend for travel and living expenses.

Students must first apply for a U.S. State Department summer internship, and upon being accepted, their names will be forwarded to the Harriman Fellowship Board.  The Harriman Fellowship Board will then invite eligible candidates to apply for the Fellowship and provide application instructions. The three Harriman Fellows commence their eleven weeks of service in either May or June.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • be U.S. citizens
  • be university juniors continuing on to the senior year, or seniors continuing on to graduate studies
  • have records of strong academics, evidence of public service, and an intention to continue education beyond the Bachelors degree
  • have applied and been accepted for a U.S. State Department summer internship in London, Paris, or Washington, DC

All students with an interest in the Harriman Foreign Service Fellowship are urged to talk with the Boston College Harriman Campus Coordinator. If you would like additional information about the fellowship before talking with the Campus Coordinator, consult the Harriman Fellowship web site.

To be competitive, interested students should contact the Harriman Campus Coordinator during the previous Spring semester, to begin preparing their application for a U.S. State Department internship well in advance of the November deadline for U.S. State Department internships.
