Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarship

university fellowships committee

The Winston Churchill Scholarships honor the former British Prime Minister. Churchill Foundation Scholarships support one year of graduate study at Churchill College of the University of Cambridge, Great Britain. Boston College is one of only ninety distinguished American colleges and universities eligible to nominate students in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics for these scholarships.

The scholarships are funded by the non-profit Winston Churchill Foundation, which is the only organization in the United States that bears his name and was authorized by Sir Winston. The scholarships are designed to give promising young American scientists the opportunity to establish international contacts while studying at one of Britain's premier centers for the study of Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering. Each Churchill Scholarship provides payment of all tuition and fees as well as a substantial living allowance and a travel allowance.

Applicants should have:

  • exceptional academic achievement as indicated by course grades (typically, Churchill Scholars have grade point averages of around 3.7);
  • a capacity to pursue original, creative work as shown by special recognition and letters of reference, and to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics;
  • and outstanding personal qualities, as demonstrated by leadership, activities, social engagement.

Scholarship recipients will be expected to enroll in one of the nine-month or twelve-month degree programs at Churchill College, University of Cambridge, and to complete all of the requirements of the program.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • be citizens of the United States, between the ages of 19 and 26;
  • be earning a Bachelor's degree;
  • take the Graduate Record Examination General Test (GRE) prior to the Churchill Foundation's application deadline;
  • apply directly to Churchill College no later than the University of Cambridge's mid-October application deadline.

Applications consist of the Churchill Foundation's application form along with: the original and six copies of the University of Cambridge Application Form with a passport-size photograph attached to each copy; a Statement of Preferred Program of Study; a personal statement written as an intellectual autobiography, outlining the applicant's interests and career plans and the experiences which gave rise to them; four letters of recommendation from faculty members; an academic transcript. Applicants must show strong performance in the general test portion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

Note: The subject test of the GRE is no longer required; MCAT scores may be substituted for the GRE.

Applications and information can be obtained from the Boston College Campus Coordinator for the Churchill. Applications must be submitted to the Coordinator in early October to receive full consideration by the Boston College Churchill Scholarship Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee will then select no more than two applicants to be nominated to the Foundation for Churchill Scholarship consideration. Applicants must apply through the Boston College Campus Coordinator; the Churchill Scholarship program will not accept applications submitted independently by students.

To be competitive, interested students should contact the BC Campus Coordinator for the Churchill Scholarship program during the Spring semester of their Junior year, to begin preparing their applications.
