VSLC Programs & Events
Volunteer and service learning center
In addition to supporting and staying informed about all volunteer opportunities on campus, the VSLC also sponsors a number of programs and events.
FIRST YEAR SERVICE PROGRAM
This is a unique opportunity for first year students to volunteer weekly in Greater Boston with other members of their class. Students can choose from one of eleven placements.
This is an on-campus, weekly volunteer opportunity that matches BC students with BC employees who are English language learners. Partners work together on language skills. Use the link above to email the coordinator for more information.
The VSLC provides transportation to three sites in Boston - a food pantry, a teen center, and a middle school. Students sign up the week before for one of the three placements. This is a great opportunity to participate in a service experience without making a weekly commitment (unless you choose to). Eagle Volunteers 2012-2013 is a featured program of the BC Sesquicentennial Celebration.
JEMEZ PUEBLO - SERVICE AND IMMERSION TRIP
This is a two-part program organized by a dedicated group of students committed to the education, cultural awareness, and solidarity of BC with the Jemez Peoples of New Mexico. In the fall, students and staff from the Jemez and Zia Pueblos travel to BC for a week, hosted by BC students. In January BC students travel to Jemez Pueblo and immerse themselves in the Jemez culture.
FAIR TRADE PROGRAMMING
The VSLC collaborates with the BC Neighborhood Center and BC Dining to host a Fair Trade Holiday Sale each December*. In addition, we support the work of the student-led Fair Trade Committee, which hosts Fair Trade week and other events throughout the year.
Please note: the Fair Trade Holiday Sale will not take place in 2012
BC BIGS PROGRAM
Make a difference in the life of a child. Become a Big Brother or Sister through the national organization and join the community of Bigs here at Boston College.
The VSLC hosts a volunteer fair for students to find volunteer opportunities with student organizations (Sept.), or community organizations in the Greater Boston area (Jan/Feb). Check out our homepage for dates and times of these events.
WELLES REMY CROWTHER RED BANDANNA 5k RUN
This run honors Welles R. Crowther, '99 BC grad and 9/11 hero, and has become a tradition at Boston College. Each fall hundreds of runners and walkers join Welles' family and friends to remember and celebrate his life and legacy. The BC community is invited to participate in this wonderful event by running, walking, or volunteering.
NICARAGUA FACULTY/STAFF IMMERSION TRIP
Faculty and staff are invited to participate in this week-long immersion experience to Nicaragua. The Center for Global Education hosts the group and provides opportunities to connect with local communities; to meet political, medical, and education figures, and to learn more about the history of, and the hope for, the second poorest country in the western hemisphere.
VSLC SUMMER BOOK SWAP
The BC summer community is invited to bring a book and/or take a book during this weeks-long summer event, held in McElroy. All books not swapped are donated to More Than Words, a local non-profit bookstore for at-risk youth. Check BCInfo in June for details.
As the mission of the VSLC states, "the Center supports the education and formation of our students by promoting conscientious service in the context of Catholic social teaching and contemporary Jesuit education." With this goal in mind, the VSLC has developed learning outcomes for our programs in the hopes that all of our students learn something about themselves and about others through programs and events we offer.
