Leave of Absence
Students frequently take a leave of absence from on-campus housing to live off campus or participate in a study-abroad program. Those choosing to take such a leave of absence for a certain period of time must complete an "Office of Residential Life Leave of Absence" form, indicating on the form how long they intend to be away from housing. Completing this form ensures that your future years of on-campus housing will remain available to you.
If you are a three-year housing guarantee student, you are required to live off campus during your Junior year. A leave of absence in any other year cannot be substituted for your mandatory Junior year off campus.
Students who take a leave of absence from housing cannot be guaranteed specific room assignments upon return. However, preference will be honored whenever possible.
A leave of absence is complete when:
- An "Office of Residential Life Leave of Absence Form" has been submitted to the Office of Residential Life.
- All personal belongings have been removed from the room.
- All issued keys have been returned to the Office of Residential Life.
A leave of absence between the first and fifth week of classes will be in accordance with the University refund schedule. No refund is possible after the fifth week of classes.
Withdrawal from Housing
Students permanently leaving the University or housing must complete an "Office of Residential Life Withdrawal" form. Please note: Completion of the Withdrawal form terminates your status as a resident student at Boston College. If at a future date you wish to return to on-campus housing, you will have to appeal in writing for housing.
A withdrawal is complete when:
- An "Office of Residential Life Withdrawal Form" has been submitted to the Office of Residential Life.
- All personal belongings have been removed from the room.
- All issued keys have been returned to the Office of Residential Life.
A withdrawal between the first and fifth week of classes will be in accordance with the University refund schedule. No refund is possible after the fifth week of classes.
Housing Appeals
Students seeking an additional semester or year of housing may appeal for on-campus housing. All requests for additional housing must be made in writing. Please note: Due to the high demand for on-campus housing, it is difficult to grant appeals.
In order to be granted an appeal for housing based on medical or psychological need, an applicant must provide evidence of medical necessity. The information provided should include a complete summary or, better still, release of records and copies of visits to your physician and/or physical therapist, delineating the current problem. Please include x-ray reports and/or other documentation that will help us make a decision. A one- or two-line note from a doctor stating that he/she thinks you need on-campus housing is not sufficient.
