What is Echo?

The Greek verb katechizein, from which we get the word catechism and its cognates, meant literally “to echo”—as a student repeats the oral instruction of his or her teacher.  In the early Church, a catechumen did just that: repeat what a mentor in faith taught about the story of Jesus and its meaning, in order to give language to what the student learned in the prayer and liturgy of the Church.

By learning the language of the faith, people came to see the world through the eyes of Jesus, the way a child sees the world through the eyes of his or her parents.

At Boston College, the Echo Program is an opportunity to consider this ancient form of Catholic teaching through social media.  Follow us on Twitter.
