Creating News Listings

how to use the news listing component and news template

The News Listing component and the News template allow you to create "news feeds": consolidate abbreviated news, events or feature items that can then be "fed" onto a designated page. These items are commonly used on a site's homepage or as a list on a page. An example of the home page usage is here; an example of a list is here.

The best way to understand this functionality is to see the News template as the form with which you create the content to be displayed and the News Listing component as the mechanism with which you display the content. The process is as follows:

  • Create the appropriate node structure so the News Listing component can read your content and display what is in the News template. Set up an initial parent page (in this case it's called News) with one child page under that to contain your news items (2010). Now you're ready to set up your news items (SampleNewsStory) using the News template.

  • Create the content you want to display. In the Site Admin screen, highlight the 2010 node, create a new page and chose the News template and name it accordingly. Double click to open in the Editing window. Now you can add your content. Here's an overview of the available fields:
Date: Enter the date if applicable. There is a date picker at the right end of the field.
External link: Add a link if applicable. This could be an external link outside of BC or a link within the BC website. You need to specify the full path in either case. Leave this blank if you want to add content to the Body field below. When left blank, the headline of news item will link to the Body content you have entered in that field.
Show on home page: Check this box if you want to show this content on the home page.
Title: Enter a title if applicable. The title becomes the link for the news item if the External link field is blank.
Subhead: Enter a subhead if applicable.
Abstract: This is a text component into which you can enter a short description of the item.
Choose thumbnail: This is an image component into which you can drag and drop thumbnails of images.
Body: This field will render only if the External link field (above) is left blank. Then you can create content within this field that is typically longer form.
Article Headline: Headline text entered here will override text entered in the Title field on the landing page. This allows users to create longer headlines for landing pages that might not fit on the home page.
Pickup: This field can be used to link to a related story in a third party news article. For example, if an a professor was quoted in the Boston Globe, the article could be linked to here.

PLEASE NOTE: Any news items you create are listed in chronological order in the Site Admin window; your newest content will be at the bottom of the list. If you would like an item to be second in the news listing, it must be second from the bottom of the list. You can easily change the order by dragging and dropping the files within the left pane of the Site Admin window.

  • Set up a news page on which the news, events or feature items will appear. Add the News Listing component to your page and fill out the fields accordingly. Here is an overview of the available fields:
List Count:
This number determines how many news items to list. For example, if you are adding news items to your homepage, you may want only 5 items. If you are setting up a landing page you may want 10 items. If its left blank, the default will show all your items.
Display abstract: Check this box if you have content you want displayed in the Abstract section of the News Listing Template.
Display title: Check this box if you want to display the title you entered in the News Listing Component.
List items on home page: Checking this will limit the display of only those items that have "List on home page" checked in the News Listing Template
Display thumbnail: If this box is checked it will display a thumbnail image that has been added to the News Listing component
Display date: If this box is checked the date will appear as it has been entered in the News Listing component.
Start/End: This allows you to control where the display of items starts and ends. For example, if you have 10 items and want to show items 5 through 9 only, you could use these fields to do so. If both are left empty the default starts at 1 and continues to the end of the list or until the current count in the List Count field is met.
Select content type: Select the content type you want to use: news, events or features.
Alternate Source: Using this field overrides the default location of your news items, which can be set up by a site administer in the Siteconfig file. (Please email websupport@bc.edu for questions about this feature) Use it to navigate to the node where your news listings are stored. If you set the source with this field you MUST also click the "Limit to selected year" box.
Limit to selected year: For specific usage where news items will span the end of one year and the beginning of the next. Unchecking this will allow for displaying news listings from both years. For example, if you wanted to list 10 items, 5 from 2012 and 5 from 2011, you would leave this unchecked. You would check the box to limit the listing to 2012.
