BC Faculty and Staff are Going Google!
a student's perspective
By BC EagleTech Taylor McEldowney
As part of our efforts to continually improve technology services, Boston College ITS announced on March 13 that BC faculty and staff email and calendar will be moved to Google Apps for Education on June 16. This decision was made following the successful move of students to Google last summer, and in collaboration with the Academic Technology Advisory Board (ATAB), The Office of the Provost, Directors, Department Contacts, and Vice Presidents.
Students have been on BC Google Apps since last year, and know what all the excitement is about, including:
- Students will be able to more easily communicate with faculty and staff. With everyone on the same system, communication is much easier and more streamlined.
- More collaboration. Students often make their group projects in GoogleDrive. Now students can share them with their faculty instead of exporting and emailing their projects.
Teachers can also put class notes or study guides in Google Drive, allowing all students to contribute to and view them.
- Calendar sharing. Faculty and staff can share calendars for their class or department
This will help students better understand class schedules, due dates or events on campus
- More and easier ways to get in touch. GoogleApps is much easier to sync with mobile devices so faculty and staff will be more available and able to access their email from their mobile devices.
GoogleApps can also be accessed from any device with internet connection also increasing their accessibility and thus their availability to students.
Students use Google Apps for Edu to communicate and collaborate every day, and having everyone at BC using the same collaboration tools makes a lot of sense.
