BC Residence Halls Now 100% Wireless

Students in the Newton and Upper Campus Residence Halls will arrive on campus this semester and discover they no longer need to be tethered to a wired port.  This summer, ITS Network Services completed a three-year project of providing wireless network coverage throughout all BC residence halls. 

The first phase involved providing wireless in all residence hall lounges and common areas.  The second phase, completed in the summer of 2009, was to provide high capacity wireless throughout the Lower Campus and Commonwealth Avenue suite-styled units.  The final phase, completed in August 2010, was to install approximately 500 additional wireless access points throughout the remaining Upper and Newton campus residence halls.

The Boston College wireless network now consists of more than 2,000 wireless access points.  Additional wireless access points are also being added to high volume locations such as the McElroy dining halls and classrooms in McGuinn to meet the high demand for bandwidth. Similar projects were completed last year in Fulton, the Law School, Corcoran Commons, and the O’Neill and Bapst Libraries.

What will the student wireless experience be like when they return from summer break?

“The students will notice a marked increase in speed and seamless connectivity within their rooms as well as the common areas,” remarked Brian David of Network Services. “The users will be balanced across available access points instead of them all connecting to one access point that has the strongest signal near them.”

Another great advantage of this project is that the students will no longer need to purchase their own wireless access points. Network Services conducted a wireless signal strength survey after the access points were installed to ensure that each room had proper coverage.

This project reaffirms Information Technology Services’ commitment to the students, faculty, and staff to providing wireless technology.
