Joseph Harrington Name President-Elect of ACUTA

05/06/10

Joe Harrington, who has worked at Boston College for the past 20 years, including the past 6 years as Director of Network Services, was recently named President-Elect of the Association for Information Communications Technology Professionals in Higher Education (ACUTA).

ACUTA is a non-profit organization made up of 1,700 members from 800 universities and colleges. Its mission is to support higher education information communications technology professionals in contributing to the achievement of the strategic mission of their institution.

Joe started in Network Services in 1990 as a Sr. Computer Repair Technician and then soon became a Network Design Analyst and Project Manager. From 1996 through 1999 he worked for the BC Law School as the Computing and Communications Specialist, and then returned to ITS as the Network Services Operations Manager, and eventually became Director of the group in 2004.

He has helped steer BC through many changes in how the university communicates, including three generations of network architecture, two generations of wireless networking, the re-cabling of dozens of campus buildings, and the introduction of Voice over IP.  Along the way he has consulted with his ACUTA colleagues and corporate affiliates for their valuable expertise and guidance.

Currently, Joe and the Network Services team are supporting projects at BC including:

  • Installing 100% wireless services throughout the Newton and Upper Campus residence halls;

  • Upgrading the university Internet and core network architecture;

  • Investigating new voice technology that will support voice and email messaging integration; and

  • Supporting infrastructure construction projects such as Stokes Commons, Bishop Peterson Hall, and the Jesuit housing on Foster Street..

In addition to his responsibilities at BC, Joe has been active in ACUTA for the past decade in roles including Massachusetts State Coordinator, Awards Committee member, Membership Committee member, and, most recently, Director-at-Large. Over the past 40 years ACUTA has evolved from an association focused primarily on telecommunications, to an association focused on all forms of information communications technology.

As President-Elect of ACUTA, Joe will continue the work of the past presidents and boards of directors by implementing new volunteer sub-committees, seeking ways to provide added value to the ACUTA.org web site, implementing changes defined in the organization’s strategic plan, and expanding ACUTA’s reach at live events using streaming technologies. He is hopeful the results of the work performed in those areas will help all organizations belonging to ACUTA.
