ITS Welcomes the Class of 2014

Each summer, Information Technology Services plays a role in the First Year Experience Orientation events.

During the course of the seven FYE orientation sessions, ITS participates in four different events.  First, as students and parents arrive to register for orientation in Corcoran Commons, ITS staff welcome them and answer questions about computing, telephone, or television services. Apple and Dell representatives are also on hand at these sessions to answer questions about the different laptop models sold through BC’s Laptop Program.

Next, ITS participates in the Information Fair for parents in McElroy Commons on Tuesdays. During these sessions, laptop vendors demonstrate their products and staff members from various ITS departments are available to address any concerns parents may have about technology on campus. Frequently asked questions include: 

  •  “What computer should I buy?” 
  • “Is wireless Internet access available?” 
  • “Do I need to bring a printer?” 

Also on Tuesdays, as students register for Fall Semester classes in Lyons, staff from the Campus Technology Resource Center help with any technical issues (such as creating or resetting passwords), supervise EagleTech student employees, and answer general BC computing inquiries. In the months leading up to the FYE sessions, CTRC, Hardware Repair, and BCCR staff work together to recover 110 laptops (from the loaner program and BCCR), then image and configure them to be used for the registration sessions. This is done through a close partnership with Student Services.

Finally, the ITS Training and Communications group is responsible for a presentation that is given to incoming freshman at orientation sessions. This presentation aims to introduce new students to the technology services available at Boston College, and is delivered to about one-hundred people four times a day at each of the seven sessions.

Delivered by ITS student employees Okello Carter (A&S ’12) and Paul Veiga (CSOM ’12), this year’s presentation focuses on five principal elements of the undergraduate technological experience at BC:

  • Network Access and Security
  • Data Back-up
  • BC Laptop Program
  • University online services
  • Technology help and support at BC

Along with other EagleTech students, Paul and Okello developed the presentation entitled “TechTube.” Modeled after YouTube, TechTube features short videos filmed by Okello and Paul, as well as other online videos. The presentation covers topical material including privacy on social networking sites such as Facebook. Stressing the importance of maintaining one’s web presence, Paul and Okello discuss how students can tailor their privacy settings to their liking.

Trivia questions and the video clips help make the presentation interactive and relevant to student life on campus. Students are encouraged to ask questions, which range on topics from the BC laptop program to file sharing, to online resources available at BC, and everything in between.

Students who attend the presentation also receive handouts that provide an in-depth description of Facebook privacy and the services provided by ITS.
