Getting Ready

boston college computer replacement program

When will I get my new computer?

When your department is scheduled to receive new computers, your Department Contact (DC) will schedule the installation date with you. You will be notified with as much advance notice as possible.

Note: Due to the BCCR accelerated schedule, the replacement timetable has been shortened considerably. The BCCR team appreciates your cooperation with getting ready for your new computer.

What type of computer will I receive?
  • Administrative staff will receive a Dell desktop computer.
  • Faculty will receive a Dell or Apple laptop or desktop computer.
  • Types of computers currently available.
  • Contact your DC if you have questions about the type of computer you will receive.
  • Dell computers will come with Windows 7 and Apple computers will come with Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

How will ITS know what to install on my new computer?

In order to make sure we transfer everything you need from your old computer to the new one and install any special software you may use, we need to collect some information about your current computer. This is a two-step process:

  1. The BCCR team will install the Altiris Software Discovery Tool on your existing computer. This tool will provide us with a list of the software you have installed.
  2. You'll need to complete a short online survey about your current setup. This will inform us of your preferred software programs as well as any peripherals — scanners, PDAs, printers — attached to your computer. As the date of your installation nears, the BCCR team will send you an email with a link to the survey.

What do I need to do to prepare for my new computer?

  • If you currently have a Windows computer, see the Windows checklist for the steps you need to take to prepare.
  • If you currently have a Mac OS X computer, see the Mac checklist for the steps you need to take to prepare.
  • The day before you are scheduled to receive your new computer, we will start the overnight process of transferring your files and folders. You will need to make sure your computer is connected to the BC network using a wired, not wireless, connection. You will also not be able to use or shut down your computer once this process begins.

What should I expect on the day I receive my new computer?

  • You will need to be present while your new computer is installed to log in and verify that your files have all been transferred.
  • In most cases, installation should take about 1 hour and 15 minutes for a Windows computer. The installation process for an Apple computer is a bit longer.
  • If desired, we will have loaner laptops available for you to use while your new computer is set up.
  • By the end of the following day, we will install any special software and peripherals you need.
