The City

Famous for its beautiful castle and cathedral, which are a World Heritage Site, Durham’s history spans over a thousand years. The city is located approximately four hours from London and fifteen miles from Newcastle, and has a population of about 45,000. The university is in the pedestrian-friendly center of town.

The University

Founded in 1832, the University of Durham is the third oldest university in England. Durham is considered one of the best British universities, as many of the academic departments rank in the top ten in the country. The university has over 15,000 students and offers undergraduate programs in 25 academic departments. Academic strengths include English, economics, history, chemistry, philosophy, and theology. A unique aspect of university life at Durham is the collegiate system. BC students are fully integrated into university courses and life and are placed in one of 16 residential colleges. The colleges are exciting and caring communities and are at the center of students' out-of-classroom experience.

The Program

The program is for the full year only and BC students are fully immersed and integrated into Durham University. Students may take any available course in the undergraduate catalog for which they are qualified. Students are further immersed by becoming part of their college community and by participating in any of Durham University's many sponsored activities.

Courses

Students are considered Durham undergraduates and are required to take a full course load. One course at Durham typically equals 20 credits; students should expect to take roughly 6 courses for the academic year. A full course load at Durham equals 120 credits.

Orientation

The University’s International Office hosts an orientation for new international students shortly before the academic year begins. The orientation will help students acclimate to life in Durham. The student’s college will host additional welcoming events during the first week.

Housing

BC student are placed in one of Durham's sixteen residential colleges. They are either self-catered or fully catered. Housing is guaranteed.

Activities

The colleges organize many social and volunteer activities. The university is well-known for its vibrant sports culture and students are invited to participate in the many sports activities on campus. In addition to being members of a Durham college, BC students have full membership to the Durham student union, which also offers varies activities and events.
