Virtual Communications

Virtual communications, the range of practices and technologies that support sharing audio, video and a variety of content online, are a growing presence in our world and the lives of our students. IDeS supports virtual communication tools which instructors can use to enhance teaching and learning in a number of ways:
Office hours can be conducted through online audio and video, allowing greater convenience and flexibility for both instructors and students. Desktop sharing technologies make it possible for them to review submitted assignments together. With additional support, instructors can meet online with a few students at a time to discuss projects and other group work.
Virtual presentations allow students to hear from experts around the country and around the world, even if time and expense prevent bringing them to campus. The use of video can allow a greater sense of connection with the speaker than audio alone, and in many circumstances the speaker can also see the students and respond to their questions directly. These exchanges might be recorded for students (and even other groups of students) to reference later.
Virtual instruction, by the same token, can take place even when a faculty member is absent to attend to another obligation such as a conference. With the assistance of a TA or other classroom intermediary, the instructor can address the class and ensure the continuity of learning from week to week. Presenting from a distant setting can sometimes open an opportunity to introduce students to other colleagues and sites important to a discipline.
Skype

IDeS supports the use of Skype for presentations in the classroom as well as one-to-one exchanges for uses such as office hours. Although all virtual communications technology is subject to some uncertainty, we work closely with instructors to ensure the best possible outcome through the following steps:
- Conduct an initial assessment to determine the best arrangement to meet your teaching goals, including any hardware and in-class support that might be needed.
- Provide assistance with a test call in advance of the event, ideally with each participant in the location and on the technology that will be used for the event itself. Although IDeS is not able to extend support beyond BC instructors, we can coordinate efforts with support personnel in remote locations.

Wimba TOOLS

Wimba Tools are "mini applications" instructors can use to provide online voice interaction, both asynchronous and real time. Wimba Voice offers threaded voice boards, voice-enabled email, embedded voice within course pages, and live group discussions. Wimba Classroom is a live, virtual environment including audio, video, application sharing and content display. Wimba Tools are available in Blackboard Vista, and Wimba Classroom can also be used independently. Read More
