Uninstall Other Anti-Virus Software

On this page, learn how to remove non-BC Anti-Virus programs such as Norton from:

 

Remove Norton or other existing anti-virus software from Windows Vista or Windows 7

  1. DISCONNECT your computer from the Internet to prevent infection while your computer is unprotected.
  2. Click Start, then select Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Programs and Features (see Figure 1).

  4. Scroll through the list of installed programs to look for any items that include either "Norton", "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate" including:
    • Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition
    • Norton AntiVirus 2004/2005/2006/2007
    • LiveUpdate (Symantec Corporation)
    • LiveAdvisor
  5. For each Symantec or Norton item (or of any other anti-virus software you need to uninstall), click to select the item, and then click Uninstall button (see Figure 2).

  6. When asked if you are sure that you want to continue to uninstall the application, click Continue.
  7. If you are not uninstalling Norton, go to Step 11.
    If you are uninstalling Norton: Select Remove All, then click Next (see Figure 3).

  8. Click Next (see Figure 4).

  9. Click Next (see Figure 5).

  10. Select Yes, then click Next (see Figure 6).

  11. Select Restart Windows Now, then click Finish (see Figure 7).

  12. Repeat Steps 1-5 to uninstall Symantec, LiveUpdate, or any other anti-virus programs.
  13. Restart your computer.

Once you have successfully removed Norton Anti-Virus or other existing anti-virus software, you may proceed with the installation of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise edition, the required Anti-Virus software for Boston College.

Removing other anti-virus software from Windows XP or 2000

  1. DISCONNECT your computer from the Internet to prevent infection while your computer is unprotected.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and select Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs (see Figure 8).
  4. Scroll through the list of installed programs to look for any item that includes either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate" including:
    • Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition
    • Norton AntiVirus 2004/2005/2006/2007
    • LiveUpdate (Symantec Corporation)
    • LiveAdvisor
  5. For each Symantec or Norton item (or of any other anti-virus software you need to uninstall), click to select the item and then click Remove or Change/Remove (see Figure 8).

  6. When asked if you are sure that you want to remove the application, click Yes or OK.
  7. Restart your computer.

Once you have successfully removed Norton Anti-Virus or other existing anti-virus software, you may proceed with the installation of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise edition, the required Anti-Virus software for Boston College.
