Staying Protected by Keeping Your Software Up-To-Date

for students

It is extremely important that operating system software, application software (i.e., Microsoft Office), web browsers (i.e., Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, etc.), and all browser plug-ins (Java, Flash, RealPlayer, etc.) are ALWAYS kept up-to-date.

In an effort to protect all computers on the Boston College network, Information Technology Services may revoke student network privileges if virus software and all necessary updates and patches are not installed.

Security experts report an emerging trend to exploit vulnerabilities in plug-ins for Internet Browsers. This can affect both Windows and Mac computers. Plug-ins include: Flash, Java, QuickTime, etc. ITS is exploring new ways to respond effectively to this trend.

To keep your Mac or Windows computer safe:

  1. Get critical updates: Mac | Windows
  2. Get updates for all installed software on your computer (Microsoft Office, etc.)
  3. Get updates for your web browsers and plug-ins
  4. See tips for securing your computer

Get updates for all installed software on your computer

To get updates on your Windows computer:

  1. Open the software application.
  2. From the Help menu (or Tools menu), click the option to get software updates.
  3. If possible, set up the application to look for updates automatically. If you cannot set this up, then check for updates periodically.

To get updates on your Mac:

  1. From the Apple menu, click Software Update.
  2. Select the items you want to install, then click Install.
