Mac OS X Lion (v. 10.7) at Boston College

Apple released Lion (v. 10.7) commercially in July 2011.

Licensing, support, and recommendations

All new Mac computers distributed through the BCCR program have Lion (v. 10.7) installed on them.

Should I upgrade to Lion (v. 10.7)?

Yes. Lion is the Mac OS version that ITS recommends.

How can I get a copy of Lion (v. 10.7)?

Faculty & staff

  • For BC-owned computers that were distributed through the BCCR program, upgrade licenses are available. If you're interested in upgrading to Lion (v. 10.7), please contact your TC for details.
  • For all other BC-owned computers, email licensing@bc.edu to request an upgrade.

We recommend that you contact your TC for assistance with upgrading to Lion (v. 10.7).

Students & personally-owned computers

You can purchase Lion (v. 10.7) on-line at Apple. We recommend you get assistance with upgrading to Lion (v. 10.7). Students can bring their computer to the Walk-In Help Desk in O'Neill 248 next to the Campus Technology Resource Center (CTRC).

Which option should I choose to install Lion (v. 10.7)?

To install Lion (v. 10.7), you have 3 options:

  • Upgrade (recommended)
  • Clean install
  • Archive and install

We recommend you backup your data before installing Lion (v. 10.7).

Important notes about Lion (v. 10.7):

  • Installing Lion (v. 10.7) may take 1.5 hours to 3 hours or more (if you migrate your data and reinstall applications).
  • Mac OS 9 is not supported on Lion (v. 10.7), which means that no Classic applications will work.
  • Lion (v10.7) is not compatible with Non-Intel Macs.
