Create a New List

bcpost: boston college's mailing list service

  • New lists can only be requested by members of the Boston College community logged in with their BC email address.
  • Please allow sufficient lead time; list requests are reviewed no later than 5 business days from the request date.
  • Notification will be sent via email indicating whether or not your request for a new list has been approved and created. If your request is denied, you will receive an additional email message with a detailed explanation.
  1. Access http://listserv.bc.edu and log in to the BCPost mailing list service.

  2. Click on the Create a List link at the top right of your screen (see Figure 1).

    The Create a New Mailing List window will open.

  3. Using the information below as a guide, complete the form. All fields are required.

  4. When you have finished, click the Create List button.

List Name

Enter a name for your list. Keep in mind that once created, your list address will be listname@listserv.bc.edu. It should be succinct and memorable and conform to the following naming rules:

  • Use all lowercase letters.
  • Do not use underscores, spaces, or punctuation characters; hyphens and numbers are okay.
  • Keep the name short. The maximum length is 40 characters.
  • List names cannot be changed.

Owner

The person requesting the list is automatically the initial list owner. Once a list is created, additional owners can be added or removed. Learn how.

Following are the choices for different list types. Changes can be made later if necessary.

Subject

Enter a one-line description of the list's purpose. If your list is public, choose something that you think would best describe the list to potential subscribers.

Description

This information will be included in the new subscriber welcome message and will display on the list's home page. You should explain the list's purpose and provide guidelines for posting. If posts are moderated, you should specify that in your description. You will have the opportunity to change or update the list description.
