AHANA is an acronym used to describe individuals of African-American, Hispanic, Asian and Native American descent.

This widely-used term was first coined at Boston College in 1979 [1].

Mission Statement

The mission of the AHANA GraduateStudent Association is to advocate for and support the needs of under-represented graduate students at Boston College through intellectual,cultural, and social programs and initiatives.

  • We support all Boston College graduate students, with a focus on AHANA and multicultural students.
  • We promote diversity and culture competency. 
  • We invite different viewpoints and ideas.
  • We strive to create a welcoming, fun environment that enriches the educational and social experiences of all students at Boston College
  • We provide opportunities for all graduate students to understand the dynamics of diversity


Membership is open to all graduates students at Boston College. Students of color and those from underrepresented backgrounds are especially encouraged to join. All members must abide by the constitution.

This year, the executive board of Graduate AHANA will focus on fostering a more vibrant and visible partnership amongst the graduate and professional schools within Boston College, as well as extending and increasing our mentor and mentee relationships with undergraduate AHANA students and retired professors at Boston College.
