The Beat Before: An evening of Jazz and copycats.
Welcome to the Heights. Now let's make the beat drop.
September 17, 2013 - 7:00 p.m. - Robsham Theater Arts Center
The Beat Before: An evening of Jazz and copycats, is a first-of-its-kind event produced by First Year Experience in conjunction with the Divisions of University Mission and Ministry, Student Affairs, and Academic Affairs. This concert will celebrate jazz for its intrinsic value to American cultural history and the role it plays in this year’s Convocation book selection, Make the Impossible Possible by Bill Strickland.
For Strickland, jazz is a source of empowerment and imagination, the wonderful act of inventing something from nothing, of diving in, sight unseen, to create something extraordinary: a piece of music, a vocation, a life. We hope The Beat Before will fill you with the same inspiration and wonder as you embark on your years at Boston College. TBB will feature a full 17-piece big band of professional jazz musicians and vocalists from the New England Conservatory, conducted by Boston College alumnus Steven Bass (A&S ’11). The evening will celebrate jazz throughout the decades, examine its improvisational nature, and pay homage to the genre through the performance of not only traditional jazz sets, but of contemporary alternative, hip-hop, and rock music born from the jazz of old.
The Beat Before is being performed at no charge to first year students, but tickets are limited. Please secure yours by visiting the Robsham Theater Box Office during the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning September 9. One ticket per BC ID.
