Externship Program

Boston College’s Externship Program matches undergraduates with employers, alumni, parents and friends of BC for short-term job shadowing and mentoring experiences.

Typically a one-day experience, an externship is an opportunity for students to gain an understanding of what a particular job entails, observe daily business operations, and make connections. Longer time periods are available if agreed upon in advance by both the student and host. For employers, an externship can serve as an excellent opportunity to market your company and develop connections with the BC community. Many BC students in recent years have received internship and job offers as a result of participating in an externship.

To participate in the Externship Program as a host, login to EagleLink and follow the instructions to register and/or post a new extern position.  Students will apply to your posting and the Career Center will best match you with the number of students you can host based on the strength of their applications. We will then contact the students to inform them of their match, and you will be contacted by the students in December to arrange the details and logistics of the externship taking place in January.

 

Here are some suggested activities for your extern to participate in:


  • Tour of organization
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Observe client interactions
  • Conduct informational interviews and network with BC alumni and other employees
  • Lunch with BC alumni and other employees
  • Review current trends in the profession
  • Explore potential career paths within the organization and the profession
