BC Police Earns Certificate of Certification

Two years ago, the Boston College Police Department (BCPD) embarked upon a new journey; a journey which would take the department to new heights as being recognized by the community and the profession as a leader among university public safety organizations.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2013 a team of assessors from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission arrived for a two day visit to examine and review the compliance of the BC Police Department's policies and procedures as it relates to commission standards and best practices of the industry.

On Thursday, May 2, 2013, the Commission awarded the Boston College Police Department its Certificate of Certification at a reception held in Andover MA. The Boston College Police Department will become the nineteenth (19th) police department in Massachusetts to be awarded Certification, and anticipate by the end of the year to join forty-two (42) other agencies as being state accredited.

“It is with heartfelt pride and professional satisfaction that we have successfully proven our compliance with all relevant standards” Director/Chief of Police John King said.

Certification is the first phase of the Accreditation process and is comprised of meeting mandatory standards and agreeing to adopt program standards as a way of doing business — these standards are considered by the profession to be best practices for police agencies, administratively and operationally.

Being certified or accredited means that:

1. The agency is committed to meeting professional standards.

2. The agency is willing to be assessed on a regularly scheduled basis by Commission-appointed assessors to confirm compliance with professional standards; and

3. The agency agrees to correct any deficiencies discovered during the assessment process to establish or re-establish compliance with program standards.

“Many members of our department contributed to writing policies and researching best practices in this important professional achievement,” Director/Chief of Police John King said.

Sgt. Laurene Spiess, the department's accreditation manager, is credited for ensuring the policies meet Commission standards.
