Rural Ireland: The Inside Story offers new visual evidence about the varied lives of a politically marginalized population. Although the works on display reveal poverty and deprivation during the Famine era, they convey aesthetic pleasures, spiritual satisfactions, and tenants’ negotiations with a growing consumer economy. Organized by the McMullen Museum, in collaboration with the Irish Studies Faculty and the Burns Library at Boston College, Rural Ireland: The Inside Story has been co-curated by Vera Kreilkamp and Diana Larsen in consultation with Marjorie Howes, Claudia Kinmouth, and Joseph Nugent. New Deal Utopias This photographic exhibit examines three planned communities conceived and constructed by the federal government during the Great Depression. Collectively known as "Greenbelt Towns," these communities were built to embody the hope that American citizens would meet the challenges of the Depression in a spirit of cooperation, not individualism. The Rising Up Project Emerging out of a need to advertise the Theatre Department's first ever dance concert, the students developed the idea of photographing Boston College dancers in ordinary locations and situations on campus. Inspired by the Ballerina Project in New York City, the marketing campaign promotes the idea of dance as part of the fabric of our lives. It is a fascinating collaboration of dance, visual art, and marketing. O'Neill Level One |
