Visual Arts

Sharon A. Bazarian '78
Freelance Photographer
Sharon Bazarian received her B.A. in Political Science in 1978. Following her graduation, she attended workshops and seminars at the New England School of Photography and Kodak. Her clients include Brigham and Women's Hospital, New Balance, Converse, and Holland and Knight. Ms. Bazarian also covers Boston area radio stations, WSKS, WBCN, WBMX, Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, and corporate functions. She is a member of the Watertown Chamber of Commerce and was a past president of the Watertown Boys and Girls Club. Ms. Bazarian has also participated on the Board of Directors for the Women's Golf Association of Massachusetts. Additionally, she is a patron of the McMullen Museum and a Parish Council member of the St. James Armenian Church.

Pope Carlos ‘03
Graphic Design/Fashion Advertising
Pope Carlos currently works as a Senior Art Director for the in-house ad agency of the TJX Companies. Though his team primarily conceptualizes print advertising campaigns for the Marshalls brand and develops the signage within its retail stores nationwide, he also lends a hand to sister-brands TJ Maxx, HomeGoods and AJ Wright. Having worked with some of the most respected shops in the industry like Hill Holliday, Duffy & Partners, Fallon Worldwide, and the Omnicom Group, Pope counts among his past clients BMW, Nissan, Citibank, Rolls-Royce, Verizon and the Democratic Party. At BC, Mr. Carlos was an Orientation Leader, an RA, and a Kairos Retreat Leader. He was also involved in UGBC, the Jenks Leadership Program, the Arrupe International Program, and Appalachia Volunteers. His proudest accomplishment is introducing and popularizing the game now commonly known as "Kiss & Tackle."

Jane Conway Caspe ‘83
Fashion
Jane Conway Caspe graduated from BC in 1983 with a B.A. in Psychology. During her junior year she started working as a model for runway, television, and advertising. This sparked her interest in fashion and design, and she has since been working in the fashion industry for the past 28 years. She owns two fashion related businesses, ACK Originals and The Nantucket Doll Collection, Inc. She is an executive manager and partner at Wildflower Concierge and co-authored a book called The Nantucket Diet published by Random House in 2005. She is on the Board of Trustees at the School of Fashion Design and works as a representative and speaker for the school. She is also on the Board of Directors at Fashion Group International and organizes as well as participates in Boston Fashion Week. This year three BC students that she met last year at the Arts Festival attended one of the Fashion Week events with her. She is proud to be helping them get started in the fashion industry. She also had a designer hire a BC student that she met last year at Career Night to photograph her fashion show. The same Boston designer also had a BC senior working for her last spring.


Bill Chisholm ‘87
Painter
Bill Chisholm majored in theater and worked as a freelance photographer from 1985-2003. His primary photography work was with models and actors for advertising clients. He furthered his fine art studies at the Museum of Fine Arts School, Montserrat College of Art, and various other private art instruction. He is now working as a full time oil painter specializing in still life and portraiture. He exhibits in Boston at Jule's Place Gallery and various other galleries throughout the country.

Kurt Hakansson ‘84
Interior Design
Kurt Hakansson is a principal of Haddad Hakansson, LLC providing full-service interior design to clients throughout New England and New York City. With over 20 years of combined experience in the design field, partners Mark Haddad ’87 and Kurt Hakansson’s expertise complement a vast array of projects including space and color development, kitchen and bath design, furniture and fabric selection, custom window treatments, and the implementation and management of major remodeling and building projects. Mr. Hakansson received his B.A. in Business Management from BC in 1984. Prior to beginning his own business in 2001, he worked in banking and finance as well as designing and selling custom furniture at the Boston Design Center. Having a combined financial, managerial, and design background has uniquely prepared him for the many challenges of being both a designer and an effective project manager and business owner. Mr. Hakansson works with the Boston Lyric Opera where he performs regularly as a supernumerarie in several operas each season. He is also a classical flute player and is actively involved in arts education in the City of Boston where he serves on the Board of Directors for the Community Music Center of Boston.

Christopher Huang ‘07
Photographer
Christopher Huang is a freelance photographer based in the Boston area. He does various genres of photography including but not limited to portraits, performing arts, fashion, events, and weddings for a wide range of clients and publications. In September, he shot a couple shows at NYC Fashion Week. He has recently expanded to doing videos as well for DJs and dance clubs, (e.g. Oakenfold, Kaskade, Bob Sinclar, Chuckie, Aoki) as well as a few other events. He is often on campus as BC has been one of his most consistent clients. Mr. Huang was involved with a lot at BC: FACES, Bostonians, Halftime, 48 Hours, Chorale, playing in a few bands, service trips, and was a TA for Intro to Feminism. With his experience leading Halftime, he realized photography was his vocation. Never forgetting his love for music, he gigs occasionally playing jazz/hip hop violin.

Rebecca Stronach Kowalski '98
Art Education/Studio Art
Bekki Kowalski was a Studio Arts Major with a concentration in ceramics; her senior project was an installation of over 200 raku masks. After graduating, she completed a year of service with the Marist Volunteer Program in Bronx, NY teaching Art Education at Sacred Heart Elementary/Middle School. She returned to Massachusetts in 1999 to join the Lawrence Family Development Charter School. She created and taught the school’s first K-8 art curriculum. In 2004, Ms. Kowalski accepted an art education position for the Randolph Community Middle School. In her 7 years at RCMS, she has initiated winter and spring Art Festivals, founded an after school mural club, as well as serving as Randolph’s Art Department Chairperson. She has also worked as the Director of Arts & Crafts at Camp Marist in Ossipee, NH. Ms. Kowalski is currently pursuing a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Bridgewater State University.

Joseph Newman '97
Gallery Director, Art Historian

Two years after graduating from Boston College in 1997 with bachelor’s degrees in political science and philosophy, Joseph Newman began his career as an assistant to a rare book dealer. This position led to six years in the antiquarian book trade, the last four with the William Reese Company of New Haven. With a background in American cultural history, in 2005 he became the director of the Cooley Gallery in Old Lyme, Connecticut. In October of 2009, he departed Old Lyme for New York, where he became Associate Director of American Painting & Sculpture at Hirschl & Adler Galleries, Inc. He is currently the Director of New Business Development at Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers in Connecticut.

Bill Sterling '65
Architect

Sterling graduated from Boston College in 1965 with a B.A. in economics and from Yale University in 1973 with a Master of Architecture degree. Bill founded Cambridge-based Sterling Associates Incorporated, Architects in 1980. Sterling Associates is an architectural and interior design firm offering broad professional experience in a wide variety of building types, including institutional, educational and residential use. He has been designing and site supervising his own architectural design work since 1980 and has provided the design and project management of over 2,000,000 square feet of construction in both new and renovated facilities.

Steve Zubricki ‘89
Graphic Design/Photography
Since graduating from BC with a business degree, Mr. Zubriki worked 5 years for a manufacturing company where he held positions in Production Control, Marketing and Product Engineering. An opportunity came in 1994 to join the family design and photography business to which he brought his business experience and learned design. He now runs the company which produces numerous corporate collateral including web sites, brochures, annual reports, logos, branding, stationery, and photography. The company serves clients in a wide range of industries including real estate, technology, pharmaceutical, retail, and financial services. The company has a design team approach, creating compelling solutions to clients needs. Mr. Zubriki applies business concepts to this approach using his skills in marketing and photography. His role includes several functions ranging from administration, account executive, sales, management, and photographer.


Literary Arts

Chuck Hogan ‘89
Author
Chuck Hogan is the New York Times bestselling author of several acclaimed novels, including most recently Devils In Exile. His novel Prince of Thieves was awarded the Hammett Prize for "literary excellence in the field of crime writing," and recently adapted into the film The Town, directed by and starring Ben Affleck, with Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, Rebecca Hall, and Blake Lively. He is also the co-author, with Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth), of the international bestsellers The Strain and The Fall, published in twenty-nine languages. Mr. Hogan is currently scripting an account of life inside Boston's notorious Winter Hill Gang for the producers of The Town and The Departed.

Tim Lemire ‘89
Freelance Editor/Creative Writer
Tim Lemire is the author of seven books, not all under his real name. Over the past 20 years, he has been a newspaper editor, an English teacher, a freelance editor, and a Communications Specialist for Fidelity Investments. He has his M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Michigan, and in 2006, Writer's Digest Books published his career guide I'm An English Major -- Now What: How English Majors Can Find Happiness, Success, and a Real Job, a book that grew out of his continuing work with Career Night for the Arts!


Performing Arts

Betsi Graves Akerstein ‘04
Dancer/Choreographer
Betsi Graves is originally from Orlando, Florida.  Her dance training includes studies in ballet, jazz, and modern dance at Studio 5d and Orlando Ballet. While pursuing a B.A. in English at Boston College, Graves performed with the Boston College Dance Ensemble, studied dance and arts marketing, and interned at Boston Ballet which led to a five year career in arts administration and teaching at Boston Ballet School.  In 2008, Graves founded Urbanity Dance, a Boston-based contemporary dance company. In three short years, Urbanity Dance performances have continued to sell out and the company has been a featured artist in dance festivals across the United States. Graves’s choreography has recently garnered grant support from Massachusetts Cultural Council, the City of Boston, and Boston Dance Alliance. Upcoming projects include The Story of Stuff (November 2010), for which Graves ventured to Guatemala to choreograph through an independent residency in June 2010.

Margaret Felice ‘02
Soprano
Margaret Felice studied music and theology in the College of Arts and Sciences, completing her B.A. in 2002. She went on to earn a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from The Boston Conservatory and has established a career as a singer, conductor, and administrator. Of her 2009 appearance in Carmen, The Boston Musical Intelligencer wrote, "Margaret Felice, with her drop-dead beautiful voice, was ideal as Micaëla."

Operatic credits include Abigail Williams (The Crucible), Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), La Ciesca (Gianni Schicci), A Lay Sister (Suor Angelica) and covers of Musetta (La Bohème) and Blanche (Dialogues of the Carmelites). Margaret has been an oratorio soloist at Pilgrim Congregational Church, St Vincent dePaul Church, Concord University, and Masterworks Chorale Summer Sings. In 2009, she was a finalist in New Hampshire Opera Idol, Little Italy Soprano Competition, and the Peter Elvins Vocal Competition.

A member-artist of Boston Opera Collaborative since 2006, she served a two year term as the company's President and has been Public Relations director for two years. Ms. Felice is currently enrolled in the School of Theology and Ministry, is an assistant director of the Liturgical Arts Group at Boston College, and is Director of the Liturgical Musicians at Boston College High School.

Brett Marks '06
Theater Production 
Brett Marks graduated in 2006 with a degree in Theatre Arts. He immediately began working for the Huntington Theatre Company as the Assistant to the Artistic Director under Nicholas Martin and Peter Dubois. He then took a job with the Lyric Stage Company of Boston as the Producing Associate, a position which encompassed the casting director, literary manager, dramaturg, company manager, and manager of Growing Voices, a new play development program. Brett is also an actor and director in Boston. Recent directing credits include Cherry Smoke with Gurnet Theatre Project and pieces in the Boston Theatre Marathon on behalf of the Huntington Theatre Company, The Lyric Stage Company, and others. Upcoming directing projects include Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet and Book of Days by Lanford Wilson. Brett has also acted steadily since leaving BC, having worked with Zeitgeist Stage, Company One, Gurnet Theatre Project, Way Theatre Artists, SAMM Entertainment, and the Vokes Players.

Maria Tecce ‘90
Musician
Maria Tecce has reaped critical praise internationally for both her singing and acting on stage, screen, and television, culminating last year with appearances at New York's Lincoln Center and in London's West End. Strapless recently debuted at Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2010 to 5-star reviews. As an actor, Ms. Tecce has appeared in Dublin's top theatres, Irish television, and BBC television. In addition to touring in Ireland, UK, USA, and Europe, Ms. Tecce has three solo albums to her credit and her music has appeared alongside Grammy award-winners John Prine, Bella Fleck, Dionne Warwick, and Damien Rice. She also performed to a sold out house at Sculler Jazz Club in Boston last week.


Arts Administration

Erin Haran MacCurtain ‘01
Arts Marketing
After graduating from BC in 2001 with a degree in English, Erin MacCurtain held positions in communications at the Massachusetts Cultural Council and in alumni relations at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Currently, she is the Marketing Manager at From the Top, a non-profit organization that showcases extraordinary young classical musicians through its NPR and PBS series. While at BC, Erin was a member of the BC Dance Ensemble and the University Chorale. One of the highlights of Erin's BC experience was spending a semester studying in London, where she interned at the Royal Opera House.

Sarah McDermott ‘07
Gallery Manager
Sarah McDermott graduated from BC’s College of Arts and Sciences in 2007 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art History and English. Immediately following graduation she worked at a non-profit organization in Cambridge helping inner city minority students achieve their educational and career goals. Sarah then went on to a position at Skinner Auction House in Boston working as the Gallery Assistant. In 2009 she moved to New York City to attend Sotheby’s Institute of Art and get her Master’s Degree in Art Business. She just completed her Master’s thesis this past October on Corporate Art Collections and is now employed at Axelle Fine Arts Gallery on Newbury Street.

Carolyn Rock '05
Arts Administration
Carolyn Rock graduated with a major in History and minor in International Studies. Her interest in arts administration began at BC and continued to grow as she took an increasingly active role in the Arts Festival. She worked in various production and marketing roles all four years at BC, ultimately taking on the administrative assistant position for the Arts Council her senior year. Currently, Ms. Rock is in her fifth year working for Boston Ballet School. In her current capacity as Administration Manager, she oversees the business operations of BBS, a $6 million dollar business unit of Boston Ballet and the largest ballet school in North America.
