Thursday, February 22, 2007 Gasson Hall 100
The social, economic, and cultural disparities between North America and Europe and the "global south"-Africa, south Asia, and Latin America-help explain different approaches to scripture and ritual, according to Philip Jenkins, professor of religious studies and history at Pennsylvania State University. He notes that most of the world's Christians live in the global south and that this demographic trend will continue. Jenkins rejects the proposition that ignorance and lack of education account for the southern Christians' literal interpretations of scripture. He suggests that the actual similarities between conditions in which they live and the world portrayed in the Bible account for their greater orthodoxy.centers/c21/fr-2007-02-22-jenkins1-220.mp4/content/bc/church21/webcast/jenkins_2007-02-22/jcr:content/logo.img.pngPhilip JenkinsCardinal Sean O'Malley, OFM: Visit to Boston College to Speak with Undergraduate Students

If we do not have a common understanding of ‘what the church is for,’ we will be hard-pressed to find either our own place within it or to comprehend what being a part of it portends for our relating to the world.

In 1955, only four percent of Americans had switched religious affiliations in their lifetimes. By 2008, it was 44 percent and rising. This sea change in religious mobility has produced a market-driven church, where “customers” increasingly demand what’s entertaining and therapeutic, but seldom get challenged to elevate personal priorities. G. Jeffrey MacDonald has witnessed the dramatic consequences of this shift from a unique perspective as both a national religion reporter and a pastor of a small New England congregation.

Hansen shared stories of people "in the second half of life" who have been inspired to do great things and to live their lives to the fullest, while balancing work, play, learning, and spirituality.
