The life of faith is a life of change.

How do we talk to one another about God, from birth to death?
How do we hand on the faith?
What challenges are calling forth renewed response
for this vital ministry of the Church?

The C21 Center's yearlong theme for 2009-2010 is: Growing in Faith: The Journey of a Lifetime. As you read about handing on the faith, you may think spontaneously of the work continuing in parish communities, as religious education and formation of children and adolescents is taken up in earnest.  But when we set our theme, we are thinking also of efforts in continuing and lifelong faith enrichment for adults, as well as those programs involving and embracing all the living generations of family and parish. The theme Growing in Faith: The Journey of a Lifetime embraces the notion of faith formation for children, adolescents, and adults. For life is a constant journey from birth to death that witnesses the invitation to faith at unique point's along life’s journey.

This topic falls under two of the Center’s four focal areas, principally through Handing on the Faith and also through our focal issue of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition.

WEBCASTS: The arts also – from music to dance to poetry, literature, painting and sculpture – provide God-given openings to faith throughout Christian history.  C21’s sub-series, the art of believing, will reveal the power of the arts in faith through the eyes and the ears, the gestures and the words of poets, dancers, and artists of many kinds.  View the webcasts from the Art of Believing Series:

  • Dance: Two Jesuit Choreographers: East Meets West, with Fr. Bob VerEecke, SJ and Fr. George Saju, SJ
  • Poetry: But Who is that Other One Who Walks Beside You? with Professor Paul Mariani
  • Literature: Monasticism, Beauty, and Contemplation: Henri Nouwen Praying to Believe with Author Bob Waldron

PUBLICATIONS:

Growing in Faith for a Vibrant Church: This richoffering to you, wherever you are on your own journey of faith, begins with the publication of the fall 2009 issue of C21 Resources.  Jane Regan, associate professor of theology and religious education at the School of Theology and Ministry, edited this issue on “growing faith for a vibrant church.”  Weaving together fine previously published and original essays, these pages provide for parents and parish ministers more than a blueprint, a pathway to the best ways we know to introduce the young hearts among us to the Heart of God.
