                    Writing the World

*From playwright Brian Friel's early 'success' (Philadelphia, Here I Come!) and Seamus Heaney's signature poems ('Digging', 'Mid-term Break'), through masterpieces, Faith Healer, Translations and the 'bog poems', to the blossom of their genius, Dancing at Lughnasa and Human Chain, we'll examine how these artists negotiated the 'Troubles' of their native Northern Ireland (Friel's Freedom of the City, Heaney's elegies and allegories), how their plays and poems converse, and how their authors emerged to command places on the world' stage as consciences of Ireland and beyond.
