Council of the Isles

boston, ma & washington, dc

The women participants on this program came from the legislatures of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales and, while in Boston, they met with groups representing the public private partnership initiatives that have been credited with allowing Massachusetts achieve high growth rates and finance large capital projects. They met with senior lawmakers and Governors from the region while discussing urban development with the Mayor and his team and looked at some of the challenges that the State still faces in a time of low unemployment and strong surpluses. Through case work with BC faculty they dealt with issues of federalism, the EU, the legislative challenge and the implementation of systems to improve communication between the different legislatures of the two islands. The group traveled to Washington, DC where they worked in an intensive workshop environment with our partner for this program, the Center for Policy Alternatives who have developed extensive experience in Ireland, Northern Ireland and, lately, in Britain.
