Highlights

Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

Sara Cordes, an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Boston College, was awarded a $50,000 grant and named an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow for 2010. Cordes’ research centers on understanding how it is that infants, children, and adults keep track of quantity – specifically, number, time and amount. Her work revolves around understanding exactly how infant representations of number and other quantities relate to later mathematics competence, and how numerical competence and fluency in early childhood affects decision making in activities involving probability, such as gambling.

The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations

The Lynch School of Education received a grant of $200,000 from The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations to support an innovative professional development program that will capitalize on Web 2.0 technology and social networking tools to provide high school teachers with mentoring and curriculum/content resources. Support, Mentoring, and Resources for Teachers (SMART) will redefine traditional modes of mentoring by creating an online, collaborative learning environment that builds upon the Lynch School’s expertise as a nationally-ranked teacher education program and participant in the Carnegie Corporation’s Teachers for a New Era initiative.
