Hoops for Hope is a charity 3-on-3 basketball tournament benefiting the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The Hoops for Hope Charity 3-on-3 basketball tournament was inaugurated on February 14, 2004.

This tournament was founded by Haven Perkins, a former member of the Boston College Football Team. Perkins was joined by a number of event co-coordinators in working tirelessly to make the initial event a great success.

The original organizing committee included Perkins, Jim Unis, Matt Hanlon, Marissa Toomey, Debbie Robb, Marisa Ventura and Joel Barciauskas.

The first annual Hoops for Hope charity basketball tournament was a large success, and drew a field of around 300 players and student volunteers. Registration fees were collected from every team involved, with funds going directly to the V Foundation. Thousands of dollars were donated in the form of goods and prizes. This outstanding day included food, music, and fun for everyone involved.

With the inaugural tournament serving as a strong base, Hoops for Hope has become an annual event at Boston College, and has continued to grow in popularity and success with each passing year. Through the continued participation of the BC community, Hoops for Hope will become a lasting tradition at the heights.

The 2006 Hoops for Hope tournament was held on April 8, 2006. The tournament was dedicated to the memory of Edward M. Hughes, a family member of one of the tournament organizers who lost his courageous battle to cancer earlier in 2006, and the presence of the Hughes family throughout the tournament was a terrific motivator for everyone involved.

The event drew a field of approximately 150 participating players and featured Men's, Women's and Co-ed Divisions, while a group of nearly 100 volunteers worked various shifts, doing check-in, court monitoring and refereeing. We were privileged to feature renowned sports commentator Lesley Visser as our guest speaker for the event. Ms. Visser is a board member for the Jimmy V. Foundation and her presence contributed greatly to helping keep the charity in mind.

The efforts all participants and volunteers were combined with generous donations from the Boston Red Sox, BC Athletics, American Airlines, Omni Hotels, PowerAde and Reebok to endure the tournament was a great success - A entertaining day of basketball, a pool of fantastic prizes and a successful fundraising effort resulting in a contribution of nearly $10,000 to the V Foundation.
