- According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of minority patients undergoing cosmetic procedures increased from 300,000 in 1997 to 2 million in 2005.
- Statistics compiled by the AAFPRS show that in 2005, more than six out of every 10 African-Americans getting cosmetic surgery had nose jobs.
- Nearly 11.5 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2006, according to statistics released today by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS)
- Racial and ethnic minorities accounted for 21.7 percent of all cosmetic procedures in 2006. Hispanics again led minority racial and ethnic groups in the number of procedures: Hispanics, 9.7 percent; African-Americans, 6.6 percent; Asians, 4.7 percent; and other non-Caucasians, 0.8 percent.
- Dr. Laurie Mintz, an associate professor of counseling psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia, says adoption of "Western values concerning attractiveness and thinness may increase minority women's risk for the development of eating disorders."Increasingly, anorexia and bulimia may be becoming "an equal opportunity disorder."
