Boston College Figure Skating Club
Synchronized Skating
The synchronized skating program at Boston College is also student run but is coached by Merita Mullen, the coach for the Colonials based out of the Colonial Figure Skating Club in Acton, MA. The team practices at least once a week on the ice and at least once a week off the ice. All practices are crucial for the team's development so it is very important that all skaters attend all practices. All skaters are required to have passed juvenile moves in the field as per the rules of the United States Figure Skating Association. Also, in order to prepare for the Eastern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championship, the team returns from Winter Break a week early. This week includes many valuable on ice practices as well as off ice conditioning and team building exercises. All skaters are asked to make as much of an effort as possible to attend this week, as it is the time that the program is solidified and the team begins to prepare for competitions. The team competes first in the Eastern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championship, and if they qualify, they also compete in the Synchronized Skating Nationals. ALthough BCFSC's budget provides for many of the team's expenses, skaters usually have to pay between $300-$700, depending on travel expenses. The team participates in different fundraisers throughout the year in order to raise money for the team as a whole. Also, skaters have the option of working concessions at BC basketball and hockey games to earn money to be put towards their final balance with the club. Also, skaters are able to pay the balance in increments throughout the season. Tryouts for the synchronized skating team are held in the early fall, as soon as the ice at Conte Forum is put down.
