5K Run/Walk For Relief 2006

The AAC's 3rd annual spring charity event! This year's proceeds will benefit the Malawi Children's Village (www.malawichildrensvillage.org), an organization dedicated to the care of every orphan in the Mangochi District. More than 40% of mothers giving birth are HIV+ in Malawi, a small central African country where AIDS is the greatest health challenge.

The Run/Walk For Relief on Sunday, April 23rd, 2006 features a 5K around Boston College campus and through Chestnut Hill, MA and begins at 12 noon. Prizes are awarded for both the top 3 male and female runners. In addition, general drawings featuring gift certificates from local sponsors will be held for all participants. Stay tuned for updates on official sponsors!

As always, volunteers are needed! Please email aidsawareness@bc.edu with any and all questions.

Registration for the run is $15 and includes an official race day t-shirt along with entry in our raffle. Although it isn't required, we encourage runners to use the Pledge form to fundraise by encouraging friends, family, faculty, etc to sponser them in our race.

Camp Safe Haven

Celebrating its 12th season, the camp will be inviting 40 children from throughout the Eastern US to Martha's Vineyard.

World AIDS Day 2005 1 December 2005 – Keep The Promise
World AIDS Day 2005 was marked across BC campus with ribbon displays on staircases focusing on the 40 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS. This year’s theme “Keep The Promise” targets political leaders from the international community to fulfill their pledges to combating HIV/AIDS and providing anti-retroviral therapy to all. A moment of silence was observed at 12 noon in O’Neill Plaza and was followed by a display of the AIDS Quilt.

Women’s Voices, Women’s Lives

Thanks to everyone who attended the screening of the documentary! The stories of Tona, Catherine and Sandra were extremely moving and gave a face to the myriad people living with HIV. The Nursing School’s Dr. Rosanna DeMarco, Dr. Anne Norris and Chad Minnich have received an American Academy of Nursing 2005 Media Awards honorable mention. We congratulate them and continue to support their film as it garners increasing attention and exposure. Event co-sponsored by GLC, UGBC and the WRC.

Artists For AIDS Benefit Concert

Thanks to everyone who made this our most successful concert to date! Over $630 was raised for Camp Safe Haven, a summer camp for children infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS with locations on Martha’s Vineyard and Maryland. Speakers included Mary Shea, Activities Coordinator for Camp Safe Haven and Rachel Iseman, A&S 2008, a summer camp counselor at Safe Haven. Special thanks to our fabulous emcee George Jasinski, A&S 2006, as well as all our performers – Roberto Peraza A&S 2006, Dance Ensemble, Dynamics, Sharps, BC Irish Dancers, Acoustics and Synergy – we couldn’t have done it without you! Last but not least, thanks to the members of the AAC who supported the event by volunteering or attending!

Pie In The Sky Fundraiser (Community Servings)
Thanksgiving 2005
Community Servings’ annual Thanksgiving fundraiser sold pies for $25 to help serve healthy, hot meals to those living with HIV and other life-threatening diseases.

HIV in Haiti: Conor Shapiro, St. Boniface Hospital, Fonds des Blancs

Conor Shapiro, the coordinator of the Anti-Retroviral Therapy Program in Fond des Blancs, Haiti spoke about his volunteer work the past two years combating HIV/AIDS in resource-poor settings. Last year, the Artists for AIDS Benefit Concert raised $600 for this charity with whom JP Shuster, A&S ’05 and former AAC Volunteer Coordinator, is currently teaching English. Event co-sponsored by UGBC Senate, Haitian Association and GJP.
