A detailed analysis of faculty unionization, the problems of part-time and other teachers at the lower end of the academic hierarchy in the United States, the issues facing students and their efforts to unionize in higher education, this book takes a partisan approach to these themes. It is, however, one of the few books to discuss the problems faced by a large number of professionals in American colleges and universities.

The book provides a combination of case studies of specific programs and broader discussion.

The editors have selected parts of documents, chapters, and articles to illustrate the key themes.

A former president of MIT, Charles Vest is well placed to discuss many of the key challenges facing research universities. This book, based on lectures Vest gave at the University of California, Berkeley, discusses such themes as the challenges facing basic research and related issues in science and technology. His discussion of MIT's Open Course Ware initiative is particularly interesting.
