Subcommittees

Charge: Subcommittees, drawn from the membership of the Advisory Committee, the Boston College community, and the larger community, are directly involved with Director and the Steering Committee in planning and conducting the programs sponsored by the Church in the 21st Century Center.

Handing On The Faith

Charge: A key challenge to Catholics today, 40 years after the close of the Second Vatican Council, is to articulate and manifest a faith that engages both Church history and the challenges of the contemporary world. In the United States, where Catholic subcultures have changed and often become assimilated to the wider U.S. culture, the particular challenge is to develop ways of practicing faith that are both authentically Catholic and yet open to the wide diversity in the nation and the world. Mindful of this challenge, members of the Sharing the Faith subcommittee will consider how the Church in the 21st Century Center can invite conversation and participation among those who do not presently have a strong sense of "ownership" of their Catholic faith, particularly the young. There are several audiences:

  • Students at BC
  • Young alumni/young adults
  • High school religion teachers
  • Religious educators and diocesan directors of religious education

Members:
Rev. James Erps, S.J., Co-Chair, Dr. Thomas Groome, Co-Chair, Dr. Lillie Albert,
Mr. Christopher Darcy, Dr. Roberto Goizueta, Mr. Henry Humphreys, Mr. John Mulcahy,
Dr. Tim Muldoon, Dr. Hosffman Ospino, Dr. Jane Regan, Sr. Mary Sweeney

Relationships And Sexuality

Charge: In a world of fractured relationships, there is a need for intelligent conversation about what draws human beings toward intimacy with others. Today, many young people lack role models on whom to base their own hopes for relationships. The relationships and sexuality subcommittee will be charged with the task of developing ideas that bring contemporary attitudes toward relationships and sexuality into conversation with the Catholic tradition, enabling people to engage Gospel values. The audiences will include the following:

  • Students at Boston College
  • Parents
  • Young adults
  • Alumni
  • parishes

Members:
Mr. Michael Sacco, Co-Chair, Dr. Jonas Barciauskas, S.J., Dr. Mary Walsh

Roles And Relationships In The Church

Charge: Modern Church history, especially in the United States, has demonstrated significant changes in the relationships among various members of the Catholic Church. In light of these changes, there are serious questions about authentic leadership, vocation, obedience and freedom, and communion, to name a few. Members of the roles/relationships subcommittee will consider how the Church in the 21st Century Center can contribute to the well-being of the Church as it negotiates this historic process of change. Potential audiences include the following:

  • Bishops
  • Leaders in the Church
  • Parish councils
  • Pastors
  • Lay ministers

Members:
Dr. Patricia DeLeeuw, Co-Chair, Rev. Paul Harman, S.J., Co-Chair, Dr. Jennifer Bader,
Ms. Rose Mary Donahue, Mr. John Dunn, Dr. Michael Malec, Rev. Robert McMillan, S.J.,
Mr. Bernard O'Kane, Mr. Vincent O'Reilly,  Dr. John Shea

Catholic Intellectual Tradition

Charge: As a Catholic university, Boston College has a responsibility to nourish and inform the Church’s intellectual life. In the context of globalization, a key question for both academics and members of the Church is this: what is the role of religious traditions in fostering a more humane world? The Catholic Intellectual Tradition subcommittee will consider ways to draw from the wisdom tradition of the Church in order to bring the gospel into conversation with a pluralistic world hungering for integrity. How can the Catholic Intellectual Tradition inform not only Catholics, but also other people of good will? What resources must Catholics bring to light in the academic community in order to address the neuralgic issues of our time? The subcommittee will recommend ways that the Center can facilitate activities throughout the university that address these questions. Potential audiences include the following:

  • Faculty at BC
  • Students at BC
  • Alumni
  • The wider academic community

Members:
Rev. Gregory Kalscheur, S.J., Co-Chair, Rev. Kenneth Himes, O.F.M., Co-Chair, Rev. Joseph Appleyard, S.J., Mr. Ben Birnbaum, Dr. Michael Connolly, Ms. Mary Lou DeLong, Prof. John Garvey, Dr. Alberto Godenzi, Sr. Mary Ann Hinsdale, IHM, Rev. Robert Imbelli, Rev. James Keenan, S.J., Rev. T. Frank Kennedy, S.J., Dr. Frederick Lawrence, Mr. James Miller, Dr. Marina McCoy, Dr. James O'Toole
