The Boston College Mathematics Institute began in 1957 with the goal of assisting in the national effort to improve content and instructional practice of mathematics at the pre-college level.


LEADERSHIP

The institute began under the leadership of Professor Stanley J. Bezuszka, SJ (1914–2008).


ACTIVITIES

The institute staff offer professional development opportunities for teachers, produce instructional materials for students and teachers, and serve as consultants in schools and districts.

9th Annual Discrete Math Conference Keynote Address

Gene Fiorini, the Associate Director of the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DIMACS), Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, gave the keynote address at the 9th Annual Discrete Mathematics Conference at Boston College on February 27, 2010. It was titled "CrIME" (Criminal Investigation Through Mathematical Examination).

The conference, co-hosted by the Mathematics Institute and Rutgers, attracts K–12 teachers of mathematics from throughout New England.
