The minor in Irish Studies requires students to complete 6 courses drawn from more than one discipline and designated as appropriate by the Irish Studies program. [These courses may not be “double counted” towards both a major and minor.] Students should contact Irish Studies at 617-552-3938 to arrange a meeting with one of the Directors for assistance planning their courses. Those completing the Irish Studies minor are eligible for the Maeve O’Reilly Finley Fellowship for graduate study in Ireland. A listing of Irish Studies-approved courses is posted on our website and is also available at Connolly House.
Signing Up
If you are interested in signing up for the Irish Studies minor, please
email your name, BC username, and Eagle ID number to irish@bc.edu. You
will then be contacted by email to set up an advising session in person
or over the phone. The minor will show up on your degree audit
immediately, but that does not imply any obligation and there is no
penalty or permanent record if you decide at a later date not to
complete the minor. In the spring of your senior year, the program
administrator will contact you to go over your completed courses and
will then clear you to graduate with an Irish Studies Minor.
Study Abroad
Students pursuing the minor are encouraged to take advantage of the partnership
programs that the Irish Studies program and the Center for International Partnerships
and Programs have developed with the National Universities of Ireland at Galway and Maynooth, University College Cork, University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, the University
of Ulster, and Queen’s University Belfast.
Irish Music and Dance
Credits
Each semester, Irish Studies offers performance courses in Irish music, song
and dance. Students
should be reminded that Irish Music & Dance performance courses
only earn one credit. Any combination of three performance courses (e.g., one
fiddle and two dance classes) can be applied to the minor, but would count
as one of the six required courses.
