University of Ulster Developing Managers

The Irish Institute at Boston College is pleased to have hosted the University of Ulster’s 2004 Developing Managers Program, which took place in Boston, Massachusetts and San Diego, California, March 20-27, 2004.  Bringing together twenty two managers of small and medium-sized businesses from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, this seven-day program examined U.S. models of excellence in business management, corporate culture, and operations and marketing strategy, as well as academic seminars with faculty from Boston College’s Carroll School of Management.

Since 2001, the Irish Institute has facilitated the American component of the Management Insitute's program of study, and this year's Developing Managers Program built on the success of previous programs. The program featured sessions with business experts and site visits highlighting innovation, best practice, and sound management.

While in Boston, the group met with Professors M. Hossein Safizadeh, Jack Lewis, Elliott Smith, and Gerald Smith, Boston College Carroll School of Management; Professor Maureen McDonal, Boston College Woods College of Advancing Studies; Bob Carter, Assistant Manager, Quincy Wal-Mart; Maura Banta, Head of Corporate Community Relations, IBM Corporation; Kevin Watts, Plant Manager, New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc.; Kathleen Driscoll, Senior Vice President, and Catharine Sheehan, Retail Direct Life Brokerage, John Hancock Financial Services; Nancy Harhut, Senior Vice President, and Mark Mylan, Senior Vice President of Strategy, Hill│Holliday; and Dr. Frank Ollington, Senior Vice President, Genzyme.
