The Institute for the Liberal Arts at Boston College is accepting proposals for projects that will be funded during the 2014-2015 academic year in two categories.
Major grants will be awarded to creative, innovative projects that will make a contribution to education or scholarship in the liberal arts at Boston College and that will need between $2,500 and $25,000 in funding per year. Proposals can request funding beginning in June 2014, and may be submitted by any full-time faculty member at Boston College. Proposals should be submitted via e-mail to Susan Dunn at the Center for Centers.
The ILA Board will consider proposals in two cycles. In the fall, we will begin accepting proposals on September 23, 2013 until a fall deadline of November 1, 2013. Decisions about fall proposals will be announced by December 1, 2013, although decisions on some proposals may be deferred until the spring. We will accept proposals in the spring between February 3, 2014 and April 1, 2014, and will announce results by May 1, 2014.
Proposals for smaller projects and speakers are accepted on a rolling basis. There will be pools of money for funding smaller projects needing less than $2,500, and another pool for funding to bring a single speaker to campus.
Collaborative Digital Projects
In addition to the usual Major Grants, this spring the ILA is also accepting proposals to fund Collaborative Digital Projects in Fiscal Year 2015. Like the other Major Grants, these proposals should be interdisciplinary, involving faculty members from more than one department or program. Ideally, these digital projects will have the potential for multiple products, including a website or app but also a course, exhibition, colloquium, workshop, or other output. These grants differ from Major Grants in that they do not require that the project directly benefit students, and there is more flexibility as to what that the funding can be used for (to buy equipment, for example).
In addition to the larger grants for up to $25,000, the ILA welcomes proposals for projects to be undertaken during the 2013-2014 or 2014-2015 academic years that require smaller amounts of funding up to $2,500. Proposals will be considered on a rolling basis until all funds are committed. Proposals should be submitted to Mary Crane via email firstname.lastname@example.org and should include a one-page description of the proposal and a budget.
These grants can help fund a conference or symposium that has the majority of its funding from another source. They can be used to bring in a speaker, or can fund activities related to a performance or museum exhibit, or other events that require less than $2,500. They will not normally fund travel and cannot be used to pay for equipment. Preference will be given to interdisciplinary proposals and to proposals that involve Boston College students in some way.
