BCRFC Victorious
On Saturday afternoon, Boston College faced off against cross-town rival Harvard. In an intensely competitive match, Boston College beat Harvard 24-10.
The first half saw physical play from both sides. A Harvard penalty in the 10th minute gave BC its first scoring opportunity. Wing Mike Hunnewell, ’08, successfully converted the penalty giving BC a 3 – 0 lead. In the 15th minute of play, BC committed a penalty of its own which Harvard’s 8-man slotted tying the game at 3. Neither team was able to score in the remaining 25 minutes and the half ended with the score tied at 3.
Once again, the Eagles came out strong in the second half. Efficient running by Sean Hanel, ’07, and Jared Long, ’08, led BC deep into Harvard’s territory. Phil Albanese, ’08, set up a crash for Patrick Twardak, ’09, who unloaded to a charging Hunnewell who put it down for a score. With Hunnewell’s conversion, BC took a 10-3 lead. Harvard increased their work rate and with strong runs from their pack, they were able to take the ball into BC’s half. As Harvard attempted to swing the ball out to the backs, though, Albanese sprung up and intercepted the pass. He ran it back 70 meters for the try, and Hunnewell’s conversion made the score 17-3.
Following the restart, physical play continued with strong tackling and running from both teams. After a Harvard yellow card and sinbin, BC put together solid phase play in a 60 meter march down the field. The drive was capped off with a powerful try from Hanel. Hunnewell’s conversion made the score 24-3. Harvard, desperate to get back into the game, began their comeback. Harvard’s back line was able to punch through the BC defensive line several times, but fullback Jon Gore’s, ’09, open-field talking prevented would be tries. Harvard started quick from a penalty on the 5 meter line and was able to touch down in the corner. The successful conversion made the score 24-10.
BCRFC’s B and C side continued their successful fall campaigns winning their respective matches against Harvard.
With this victory, BC moved to 4-0 in league play, and they remain at the top of the NERFU White Division. BC will take on UNH Saturday October 14th at 1PM on Brighton Campus in their final regular season game.
