BC Goes 1-1 at NRU Playoffs; Finishes 3rd in Northeast
On Friday, November 10th, Boston College Rugby Football Club traveled north to Batavia, NY to take part in the 2006 NRU college playoffs. The NRU playoffs are the culmination of the entire Northeast Rugby Union season, where the top teams from New England and New York State meet to decide the NRU seeds in the national playoffs.
In their first game of the weekend, BC faced Harvard for the second time this season. In what could only be described as treacherous conditions, BC relentlessly tried to run the ball in tight to counter the bad weather. An early Harvard penalty made it 0-3, but BC was determined to get a score of their own. Following the penalty, however, Harvard was able to pounce on a loose ball in the try zone to make it 0-10. As the match wore on, well-placed kicks by Harvard meant disaster for BC, as they were unable to successfully move the ball into Harvard territory and score. As the final whistle sounded, BC fell to their rivals 0-33.
After their loss to Harvard, BC was determined to defeat their Sunday opponents, the US Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point. In what was another cold and dark day, BCRFC and USMMA played what ended up to be a tightly contested match. BC scored early, but USMMA did not back down as they countered with scores of their own. Exhibiting the kind of heart that carried them through the entire fall season, BC was able to put in more scores of their own and hold off the fierce USMMA attack. As the final whistle sounded, the BC Ruggers walked off the field with a 24-20 victory, knowing that they had given their all and deserved every ounce of the win.
BCRFC finished 8-2 on the season, which placed them 3rd in the Northeast Rugby Union. BCRFC's undefeated play in the NERFU's White League gave them 1st place in the league.
