BCRFC wins first NERFU playoff match

This Saturday on Shea Field, the Boston College Eagles defeated Norwich 17-10. The match marked the first time BCRFC has played on Boston College’s main campus in quite some time. It was a hard fought playoff match against a tough military academy team, but the Eagles came out with a win once again.

The first half was a back and forth battle. Although the Eagles kept the ball mostly in Norwich’s territory, their offense struggled to make the final pass on several occasions. Strong running from Karl Danso, ’08, and Steve Petteruti, ’07, moved the ball farther down the field, but BC failed to put together a scoring drive for much of the first half. Once within the five meters, 8-man Justin Bolebruch, ’08, muscled through the Norwich defense and into the try zone to put BC up 5-0. Wing Mike Hunnewell, ’08, was good on the conversion making the score 7-0 BC. Norwich quickly came back. Within minutes, they responded with a 20 meter penalty kick to make the score 7-3 at the half.

Early in the second half, a second yellow card was issued to a BC player and he was sent off for the remainder of the game. As a result, BC played much of the second half a man down. They played hard though, and still managed to come out on top. Fly-Half Phil Albanese, ’08, sliced through the defense and into the try zone with 20 minutes left. Hunnewell’s conversion made the score 14-3. Then with 10 minutes left, an errant pass by BC put Norwich deep into BC’s territory. Norwich pushed it into the try zone and converted the kick to make the score 14-10. Unphased, BC controlled the remaining ten minutes. They did not let the ball out of Norwich’s territory, and with a couple of minutes left, Hunnewell made a 30 meter penalty kick to put BC up 17-10 and out of Norwich’s reach.

The win makes BC’s record 6-0 on the year, and sends them down to West Pointe next weekend for the NERFU Championship game. Please contact Steve Petteruti (petterut@bc.edu) if you are interested in attending.

Again BC’s B and C sides were victorious. Both sides played against and defeated Norwich’s B-side keeping BCRFC’s undefeated season going.
