March 19th – 20th @ New York City, NY
Played on Randall's Island and steeped in the shadows of the Big Apple, BCRFC's first outing of the season proved to be well worth the trip. Apprehensive to start, the team quickly found their sea legs, beating a tough Princeton 10-5 and losing by one to Westchester State, 15-14. Advancing with their usual intensity, BC exchanged blows with the polished Princeton. Despite these efforts, the team seemed to lack the cohesiveness that had characterized the past season, and as a result, met the half down by five. Following an inspiring talk by the coach, Brendon Worley, the furious fifteen returned to the field more focused. True to form, BC scored soon after returning from the break; freshman Phil Albanese making an outstanding play to nab the try. Assisted by the brutal hits of Kevin "Donkey" McDonald, the team quickly scored again, firmly putting the nail in the coffin. The second game of the day featured charged up BC against the sizable fifteen of Westchester State University. Hard fought by either side, the game provided a chance to test out the few reserve's that had been brought along on the trip. Taking a chance, this exam produced near stellar results. Performing well both on offense and defense, the subs soon settled the nerves of the anxious coach and captain. Ending with a successful, yet futile, conversion by fullback Bryan Ciccarelli, the team's attempt fell short, losing 15-14. Happy with the progress that had been made, BCRFC returned home ready to take on their next opponent, the formidable Boston Irish Wolfhounds.
March 22nd vs. Boston Irish Wolfhounds @ Home
Crusted with snow and ice, BCRFC took to the field against the Boston Irish Wolfhounds on a cold and windy day. Looking as polished as the week before, the A-side strived to work out any remaining wrinkles impressed during the off-season. Judging by their performance, holding the Hounds to a draw at the half, it was clear that BC was already in mid-season form. Using the next two halves for B and C sides, many of those present received their first tastes of competitive rugby Expertly putting the weeks of hard work into practice, both sets of reserves played well against the veteran Irish.
