An open letter to Republicans from our Director of Political Affairs, Mike Sinacore (sinacorm@bc.edu):

Dear Friends,

It is easy to feel that we have failed as a party after yesterday's election. This thought hounded me throughout class today. However, as I began thinking about the results, I realized that these events are only a defeat if we choose to see it as one. We only lost if we don't learn our mistakes and if we ignore the Conservative values that came out yesterday.

For the first time in our lifetime, Americans felt that the Republican Party betrayed its Conservative values. People were upset about the debt, government growth and corruption. Voters were not upset that we had cut taxes or strengthened our defenses. They were embracing conservative values, not eschewing them. Democrats were even running as conservatives. Casey ran as pro-life and Brown ran on a small-government ticket.

This expression of Conservatism represents a victory in the fight for our values. Since the Reagan Administration, we changed the political conversation in America. We did this by shouting, campaigning and practicing our values. When people experienced the growth of the 80's and the renewed security under Bush, they became Conservatives. If we learn anything from this experience, it is that by taking up these values again, we can win in 2008.

What does it mean for us at BC? The College Republicans will continue to do what we do. We are going to work hard on grassroots campaigns, have controversial speakers and make sure that every Republican on this campus feels welcome at Boston College.

We will push harder for Conservative values, knowing that it this that saved America under Reagan and this that brings America's true prosperity and strength. The College Republicans at BC will use history as our guide and will fight even harder to educate those about our beliefs. I assure you, the Reagan Revolution is far from over!

In the coming week we will be having a meeting to discuss this campaign and talk about what direction WE, the Boston College College Republicans want to take our party. Even if you have never come to a meeting, I encourage you to come so we can make sure the Republican Party and the College Republicans are there for ALL Americans.

In this difficult time, I will leave you with the immortal words of Ronald Reagan, spoken in his farewell letter to the nation in 1994. "I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America, there will always be a bright dawn ahead."

May God Bless you and God Bless America!

Mike Sinacore
