About DOBC
Our Mission Statement:
The objective of DOBC shall be to provide an open environment by which to promote the art of dance amongst the Boston College community. The club offers a variety of studio classes in diverse styles and all levels. More advanced students can expand their talents through choreographing, auditioning and performing in an annual show, while beginners are provided with the opportunity to learn and gain experience through weekly classes.
A Brief History of DOBC
Written by founder and first director of DOBC, Allyson Olewnik (Class of 1998)
"I have actually kept track of the on-goings of the group over the years, and it is so awesome to see what you all have done with it. When I started DOBC, we had no money- we practically had to beg ODSD for funding every year- and we started very small with about 5 girls. Our first show was in Gasson 100 in May 1998 and was about 15 minutes in length, but we saw it as a start. From 1995-1998 we offered Master Classes to the small group that we had as members and in 1998 even started ballroom classes on campus, which proved popular! 1999 was a building year and there wasn't a show, but classes continued under the direction of Amanda (I have to look up her last name because it escapes me at the moment) and Claudia Zaborsky. Stephanie Wade took over in 2000 and had me back to teach, and I performed with the group in Gasson 100 once again for two successful shows- 2001 was the first year we managed to get onto the Robsham stage- a huge victory for the group! I was once again lucky enough to continue to be a part of this growing group. Erin Harper then led the group from 2002-2003, increasing the number of shows we were allowed and again securing our spot in Robsham. Cheesy as it sounds, I cried the first performance we had on main stage because it was something I never thought I would have the chance to do at BC, and I was so proud of everyone that brought that chance to so many other dancers.
I have been so proud to see the group grow and each director really add a piece of herself to it- adding to the original vision and really making it her own. When I got to BC in the fall of 1994 I was told there were no classes for me to take, unless I auditioned and was accepted- to me that was a huge wall up against so many people and the reason for creating a group for everyone who loves dance, no matter what their ability or experience. I think that mission has been met and exceeded over the years. "
