John Finney, Director

John Finney is now in his twelfth year as Director of the University Chorale of Boston College. Under his direction, the University Chorale has performed throughout the Boston area, and in a number of the world’s major cities, including New York City , Dublin , Prague , Vienna , and Rome . In April 2000 he conducted the world premiere of Thomas Oboe Lee’s Mass for the Holy Year 2000, commissioned by Boston College for performance by the University Chorale.

John Finney has been recognized as one of the most important musicians in the Boston area. He is the Associate Conductor and Chorusmaster of Boston’s Handel & Haydn Society, and has conducted concerts for the Society at Symphony Hall, in Jordan Hall, and at the Shubert Theatre. He is conducting the Handel and Haydn Society’s 2004 performances of Handel’s Messiah at Symphony Hall. He has received international acclaim for his work as Chorusmaster of the Boston Early Music Festival Chorus. He is Director of Music at the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church in Wellesley , and has been the conductor of the Heritage Chorale in Framingham since 1987.

Holding degrees in organ performance from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and The Boston Conservatory, he has concertized extensively throughout the United States and Europe as organist and harpsichordist. He has been a prizewinner in several international organ competitions, and has recorded for the Denon, Nonesuch and Decca labels. He is a member of the organ faculty of The Boston Conservatory, and taught for six years at the Academy for Early Music in Bressanone , Italy .

In 1999 John Finney was appointed the conductor of the Boston College Symphony Orchestra and given the title of Distinguished Artist-in-Residence at Boston College .
