House of Corrections
Placement
Education at the Suffolk County House of Corrections is a critical component of breaking the cycle of crime that persists in the lives of many inmates. Through adult education classes, inmates have the opportunity to earn their GED, adult diploma, and even college credits.
4Boston's Role
4Boston volunteers will be responsible for tutoring inmates preparing to take their GED test. They will tutor math, reading, writing, and occasionally English as a Second Language (ESL). Volunteers who come in the daytime may have a chance to assist a teacher in teaching their class.
Hours
Mon - Thurs before 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM (preferred time), Monday - Thursday 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM or 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Location
Take the Green Line to Hynes Convention Center. Take the Massachusetts Avenue Exit. Cross Mass Ave. to the bus stop. (You will see a Best Buy across the street when looking at the T stop from the bus stop.) Take the 1 or CT 1 Bus from Newbury St station heading to Dudley Station. If you are on a CT 1 bus, get off at Harrison Ave-Boston Medical Center.
If you are on a 1 bus, get off at Albany St (one stop after Harrison Ave-Boston Medical Center). Cross Mass Ave. so that you are across the street from the Albany St bus stop you just got off at
Start out going East on Massachusetts Ave towards Melnea Cass Blvd (2 blocks towards a huge highway type intersection). Cross the highway-type intersection and turn left walking alongside the highway (going towards Mass Pike) on a dirt path with a fence on your right (you'll see a road parallel to you probably with many cars parked on the side). After about a block there will be a break in the fence and the road that is parallel to you will veer right. Cut through the break in the fence and follow the road. Suffolk County House of Corrections will be on your left.Council Member 2012-13
