Commonwealth Tennant's Association

Placement

The Commonwealth Housing Development is fully integrated public housing, owned by the Boston Housing Authority and managed by the Corcoran Management Company (CMC). It is located a short distance from Boston College , near the intersection of Commonwealth Ave. and Washington St. , in Brighton . As part of its services to residents, the Commonwealth Tenants' Association (CTA) manages an After School Tutoring Program. The intent of this program is to provide help with the academic needs of the children living in the development while teaching them to value and enjoy their academic development. It gives the children a routine time to and place to study and provides them with role models and friends in the tutors. The program also offers the children a range of fun activities which contribute to their enjoyment of the program and supply them with supervised, safe opportunities for recreation.

4Boston's Role

4Boston volunteers meet with the children (ages 6-14) for two afternoons each week. Tutors work with the students on their homework for the first half hour (or more, as needed) and use the remaining time for educational and recreational activities. 4Boston students are responsible for planning and implementing all components of the program, so volunteers interested in elementary education, art, crafts, sports, or music are especially encouraged to apply.
