AHANA SUMMER SESSION TUITION REMISSION PROGRAM 2003

Home | Services | Staff | E-mail

The purpose of the AHANA Summer Session Tuition Remission Program is to aid in the retention of AHANA students by providing resources to allow those in academic difficulty the opportunity to improve their status at Boston College. Any AHANA student (someone of African, Hispanic, Asian, or Native American descent) who experiences academic difficulty and wishes to take summer courses should first seek assistance from his/her respective counselor or another professional staff in the Office of AHANA Student Programs. If after utilizing available supports, students find that they still need to take summer classes, they should then apply for the AHANA Summer Session Tuition Remission Program.

The AHANA Summer Session Tuition Remission Program provides up to two (2) courses and housing and dining for eligible AHANA students. Students who regularly utilize the office's services by maintaining a relationship with a counselor (e.g., meeting at least three times per semester) and who seek other means of academic support, and yet still need to take summer courses may apply.

Eligible students must submit a completed application, a most recent unofficial transcript, and the pink copy of the Course Request Form which is available from their Academic Dean to the Office of AHANA Student Programs at 72 College Road by Friday, March 28, 2003 at 5:00 PM.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ABOUT THE AHANA SUMMER
TUITION REMISSION PROGRAM 2003

WHO IS ELIGIBLE DURING THE SUMMER?

Awards will be made to those AHANA students who have accumulated deficiencies (withdrawals and/or failures), and who can demonstrate that they have utilized the support services of the Office of AHANA Student Programs through its tutorial program, counseling services and academic advisement. Based on Summer Session constraints, a few awards shall be made on the basis of merit alone and, thus, awards may also be given to students who have done well and have likewise shown that they have utilized the office's services.

Back to FAQ

WHY DO I HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE PROACTIVE ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE?

The funds for summer session are provided to students who have made an effort to improve their academic situation. Unless students make an attempt to improve during the academic year, the summer session may not be the best help.

Back to FAQ

WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF COURSES THAT ARE ALLOWED?

A maximum of two courses is allowed.

Back to FAQ

CAN I GET HOUSING DURING THE SUMMER?

Possibly. Housing is NOT AVAILABLE for the first Summer Session but will be available for the second session. Housing awards are based on academic merit and financial need and may be provided where commuting is neither feasible nor possible on a case-by-case basis. Office funds are for standard double or triple occupancy only (NO SINGLES AVAILABLE).

Back to FAQ

ARE MEALS AVAILABLE DURING THE SUMMER?

A limited food allowance for second session only is available on a case by case basis.

Back to FAQ

WHO WILL MAKE THE DECISION?

The Counselors will develop a list of students for whom Summer Session is required. The final decision will rest with a committee consisting of senior staff in the Office AHANA Student Programs. You can check the Office of AHANA Student Programs Web Page (www.bc.edu/ahana) for results, which should come three to four weeks following the March 28, 2003.

Back to FAQ

WILL I RECEIVE AN "ENTIRE PACKAGE"?

Not necessarily. In most cases, students apply for everything (i.e. two courses, room and board) and are only awarded a portion of it. It is best to apply for only that which you need.

Back to FAQ

WHEN IS THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS?

The deadline is FRIDAY, MARCH 28, 2003. Late applications will be accepted and considered at the discretion of the Committee.
